What will happen to the RCMP 5946 after the new pistol comes out?
What will happen to the RCMP 5946 after the new pistol comes out?
I'd love to be able to buy mine from the force, but I know they're prohibited. Other than rebarelling, the pistol would have to be deactivated I guess?
Has anyone heard anything?

Probably the same as when we transitioned from the Model 10 .38 Spl: thrown into a dumpster and hauled to the nearest smelter for secure destruction.
I was involved twice with such destruction:
- 1995: surrendered #D766405 and received #VBS2592, while we were told the old gatts were going to be taken to;
- 2012: as Site Supervisor, I escorted the members from DEPOT when they brought over various weapons and ammunition, and watched the items being dumped into;
the smelter at IPSCO / EVRAZ Regina.
I regret never having photographed my badge, sidearm, and other gear, for any of the 3 combinations (I HAD a silver badge, with my Reg #, that I SHOULD HAVE "lost", as several members had, before having to surrender it for our gold one).

Yeah, I figured they'd just be destroyed or smelted which is unfortunate

All transfers of restricted firearms, including handguns, have been shut down by Order in Council from the Prime Minister. No person will be able to import, buy or transfer handguns in Canada. What you own now is what dies with you.

If they are deactivated though that may not matter though

Deactivation involves extensive welding of the action, barrel, magazine, slide and trigger, plus inspections to ensure it can never be made to fire. The RCMP cannot transfer them as a functional handgun to individuals and it is unlikely they will be paying the extensive cost per gun to perform the necessary work themselves.
Plus, the RCMP would be very rightly concerned about a deactivated handgun being stolen and used in a crime such as a police impersonation situation.
Sorry but the only way people will get to have them is to buy something made from the steel that they will be melted down to.
