Re: Alberta Sheriff Applicant Thread
Rumours are that there will be 2 classes starting in June.
Re: Alberta Sheriff Applicant Thread
Makes sense.
I just got an email yesterday asking me to book a PARE immediately so if there’s a class starting on the 19th I’m optimistic that they’re trying to slide me into it. Got my PARE June 8th.

Re: Alberta Sheriff Applicant Thread
Hello,
Can anyone who attended the academy tell us how the academy work looks like?
I heard there is a pare on first day, what is the time to pass the test and is there another pare on a later date.
Any running tests such as 2k, 5k
Any other physical test?
How about other tests, are they hard or ok
Anything else that we should know
Thanks in advance

You’ll likely run PARE twice, in the first and last week. Pass time is 4:45 with expectations of improvement between the 2.Newofficer007 wrote: ↑Wed May 31, 2023 10:29 amHello,

There will be other physical activity but not tested per se. Don’t get me wrong, you should really demonstrate an effort as it is a testament of your character (can you push yourself? If I’m ever if a bind and you’re my partner, are you going to run to help me out?)
There are a few written exams, one for each of the major components: law, control tactics, communication, etc. You will also have other exams like mid-term and final. They’re not hard if you take some note, pay attention in class and study a bit. One of our guy was a super team player and prepared electronic flash cards which he shared with the class; it worked fantastically.
It’s not army Boot Camp type academy. The training is 8-4 ish Monday to Friday. There are no room/kit inspections. There are no drill Sgt screaming at you inches from your face… Listen to the instructions and rules. Obey them… even if it makes no sense to you. The staff were phenomenal to us, but they are not “friends” (until you graduate). They were going out of their ways, volunteering their time to help folks struggling with firearms drills or control tactics.
Now, there have been lots of questions about fitness. Here’s my perspective. It’s not Navy SEAL, ninja level 15 SWAT training you will face at the academy. It also not like most YouTube videos about “police academy” But…if you (general “you” - not specifically @Newofficer007) can’t run 5 km at a moderate pace (30 mins), do 30 push ups, sprint a couple hundred metres, do 15 burpees or are concerned about a 4:45 PARE, then you should hit the gym and postpone any law enforcement applications until you reach that level.
The academy won’t put you through daily dedicated physical training (PT) classes daily because the academy runs on union-negotiated 7.75 hours per day. So your fitness is on you to look after on your off time. But when you spend an afternoon doing ground fighting drills, or you face a scenario where a 6’3” 220 lbs actor (who is a corrections officer in real life) comes at you swinging, you’ll be grateful for going into this somewhat fit. I’m sure this is a very cliché adage, but it is said “when you join law enforcement, you give up your right to be unfit”. My $0.02 on this.

Anyone get an official offer letter yet? Some emails have been received but no letter? I’m reluctant to leave my current job until this thing arrives!

Re: Alberta Sheriff Applicant Thread
I would just like to confirm to people that there are 2 classes this June. June 12 and June 19. I was able to move to the later one due to some matters.
Re: Alberta Sheriff Applicant Thread
check your emails! my notification of an offer came today
that's a lot of people! especially if the classes are split with corrections recruits (don't know for sure...basing on experiences of colleagues working in corrections)
I'd like to move to the later one because I could use the extra week to get everything in order!

Guessing no chance of getting own room then

You never know! If you’re from outside Edmonton, you might get paired up with an Edmontonian that’ll choose to go home each night !
