Alberta Court Security and Prisoner Transport Services is currently seeking new members for full-time, permanent Law Court Sheriff positions in various locations in Alberta that may include (depending on operational need): Edmonton, Calgary, Wetaskiwin, Red Deer and Lethbridge.

As a Law Court Sheriff, you will be responsible for providing a secure and armed presence within Provincial Court Facilities, Government Centre(s), Legislative Buildings and other assigned locations. In addition, you will ensure the safety and security of all persons within the above assigned areas including the Judiciary, Government Employees and Officials, as well as members of the public. Your responsibilities will also include:

- Supervising prisoners within holding cells and escorting prisoners to and from various facilities, ensuring care, custody, and control

- Assisting with out of province prisoner escorts

- Performing security screening and searches on all individuals entering courthouses for weapons or prohibited contraband

- Monitoring courtrooms and supervising prisoners attending court

- Providing security services for special events and conferences

- Patrolling and searching designated facilities and responding to any incidents

- Conducting arrests and Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) checks in accordance with applicable legislation and procedures

- Providing directions and answering inquiries from the judiciary, courthouse employees, lawyers, law enforcement and the public


As a Law Court Sheriff, you will need to be able to defuse potentially dangerous situations. A high degree of integrity and maturity is essential for this role as well as confident and sound decision-making skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential in this role, as you will interact with various internal and external stakeholders and members of the public. As a representative of the Alberta Sheriffs Branch, you must maintain a high level of professionalism, reliability and be able to demonstrate sound judgment and excellent problem solving skills when interacting with challenging individuals.

Qualifications
A minimum of a two-year diploma is required. A post-secondary diploma, degree, or journeyman certification in any field may be considered. Equivalencies will be considered on the basis of one year of experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.

Directly related experience in law enforcement and/or security is preferred. Experience providing security services in courthouses or other government buildings is an asset. Experience using electronic equipment to perform security screening is an asset.
