Re: Toronto Police Service
First off - TPS would be better off not filling spots than hiring people who can not pass a BASIC fitness test. There’s zero excuse for someone in their 20s, 30s and 40s to fail that PREP short of having an injury. I understand that policing has become very much about de-escalation and the like, but Toronto, like many cities, are facing increased acts of violence against their people. Your fitness level will determine the outcome of many of these.Given how much of a struggle it’s been for TPS to fill spots, they better give you a chance. With that said, in my class a few people were given a second chance but were required to do the entire PREP.
Your BGI doesn’t owe you an explanation nor are you entitled to one. The fact he did let you know why there has been a delay is more than many would say….at any service. As for calling all your references - they are not going to call 13. Ever. They will call 6-8 to ensure they have gotten a good idea of the sort of character you possess, but not 13. They have stacks of files. My background investigator get back to me after 3 weeks wait period and told me he was sick due to which he didn’t get back to me for that long and also told me that he will call rest of my references.
Recruitment is a “waiting game”. If you want the position, you will wait. At the end of the day, if it is offered to you, does it really matter if it took 3 more weeks than you wanted it to?
Investigating and clearing people to be hired for a position in which you have access to people’s personal records, carry a firearm and are required to make decisions involving people’s liberties is a huge task and one that BGIs can NOT rush. One poor hire can do huge things to erode public trust if they are a poor choice.

I agree with your sentiments. But then I see some of the other divison’s board and it’s 1 car and and E01 to handle the night. With that said we are letting in recruits who don’t pass their PREP the first go.devilwoman wrote: ↑Fri Mar 03, 2023 6:48 pm

Again. It’s unacceptable that people can’t pass it on the first go. If you truly want the job, you’ll show up and try to win it the first time. There’s no second chances in a physical confrontation nor do bad guys let you “re-do”.I agree with your sentiments. But then I see some of the other divison’s board and it’s 1 car and and E01 to handle the night. With that said we are letting in recruits who don’t pass their PREP the first go.
Additionally, everyone knows what the test is and if they are interested in being a police officer they should have established some basic fitness far before putting in the application. If they haven’t, then they shouldn’t put in.
As for staffing numbers being poor that’s something that won’t be helped by hiring new recruits….especially unfit ones. They’ll only add to the sick book offs as they are unable to handle the physical demands of the job (shifts, wearing heavy gear, etc). If you’re unfit at 25 and unable to correct it before working shifts, you’re gonna get worse once on the road and that’s part of the reason for short staffing.
Your point? Character and employment references are more important than close friends as far as providing a snap shot of a person’s work ethic, demeanour, abilities, etc..Does it really matter at the end of the day? You’ve also indicated you’re upset over a 3 week delay, so you’d think you’d be happy that they aren’t spending additional time calling 13 people.I mean yeah they might not call everyone but they called all of character reference, all of work references but none from close friends and ex partner section.

Re: Toronto Police Service
I know. Even when I wasn’t in the best shape I was able to clear the PREP comfortably- emphasizing how basic this fitness test really is. But some folks do struggle with the following instructions portion of it- even if they appear to be in physical shape (that’s it’s own issue). But the sentiments I get when I show up for parade is that being a Toronto officer doesn’t have the appeal it once had given our recruitment numbers. My class was only 82 of the 120 we’re supposed to get. I’m in a division that has the most accommodated officers. Recruitment is giving all the breaks they can for potential applicants.devilwoman wrote: ↑Sun Mar 05, 2023 4:10 pmAgain. It’s unacceptable that people can’t pass it on the first go. Hello all, new addition to this forum.
Does anyone happen to know if standard practice for your BGI is to contact all of your listed references? My character and employer have only been contacted thus far. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Toronto Police Service
Hi guys good evening.
I emailed my background investigator by myself today because I didn’t hear back anything from him since last Tuesday.
He told me he already completed my file since last week but can not share anything about investigation. It is understandable as they don’t
But I had no call or any personal meeting with my investigator and was wondering if its possible for background investigators to complete file without meeting or having call with me as most of my friends had quick 30 minutes call or meeting before completing their bgi.
Also does could it mean something come up in my file?. Because normally when file get sent to higher team , candidate is always informed but in my case I had to email by myself and ask
