Terminated in Week 21 - Arggghhh!!!

Postby boomerang33 » Sun Mar 02, 2008 6:24 pm

Hey,

I finished 20 weeks of training in DEPOT but got two "U's" in Police Defensive Tactics....sigh.....does anyone know of anyone that went back to DEPOT after a termination, and what the process is to get "reinsertion". I heard that you can start at week 13 if you passed the midterm. I'm on the fence right now on whether or not to go back...please share any insights any of you might have around this. I spent two years in the application process, left behind a decent finance job, and gave it my all for 5 months. Now, if it is true about reinsertion....it's only 3 months to finish up and I have the benefit of experience in the program already...so why am I at such a crossroads? Would like to hear any tidbits of wisdom. All the best in your applications.

What's so hard about the DT that you couldn't get by?

I had no idea they kicked anyone out for anything other than honesty. We had people in our troop with several U's in a variety of everything near the end.. they were just back trooped to week 4.

I second this. How many PDT practises did you have?

I've heard of people getting the boot lately for U's. We had a reinsert who had accumulated a bunch of NI's and a U on the second PDT test.

If you want to be a police officer then you better try and get re-inserted, if they will take you. I can't imagine that thundering in at one police academy would look good if you applied elsewhere.

I also can't imagine anything in DT being overly difficult to pass.
I'm not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but let's take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. I got a "P" (professional) for my first Police Defensive Tactics test. But an "NI" (Needs improvement) for being a little soft in my commands. I was in a living room setting and thought the voice volume was appropriate. I did my second test in the Sam Steeles Residence (large garage type setting with over 8 vehicles parked) and decided to raise my "police voice" this time. I was given a "U" for being overly assertive, and "yelling and screaming" commands indicative of an out of control police presence and since I was standing behind a vehicle for cover and concealment purposes, it seemed that I was "afraid" of the individual being arrested. In retest #2, although the techniques used to arrest, including voice, presence, transition from OC spray to baton etc was acceptable, I Chartered and Cautioned at the end of the scenario. Thus a second "U" for law and policy violation. Honestly, it just seemed that things were pretty black and white there, and instead of going to "Needs Improvement"....jumping straight to a "U" seemed to be the trend. We lost one third of our troop for various reasons. Practices were 3 times a week. *sigh*. It's been a weird situation being home and not with the rest of the troop. The more I think about it, the more I want to go back and finish what I started. Thanks for the encouragement!!

Wow... that's quite retarded in my opinion. Did they not forget you're in TRAINING. And their goal as INSTRUCTORS is to help you through the training. Not throw you out.

How petty.

How exactly is that petty? If he was being tested on it in week 21 then it's part of his final exams, which means he's had more than enough time to a) learn how to do it through the course of the previous 21 weeks, b) practice not only during instruction time, but during the several after hours sessions the instructors make available for extra work, not to mention seek help from other cadets, the PDT gym is available 24 hours a day if he felt he needed work.

You have DT class every day for the past 21 weeks? DEPOT or OPC or any facility is a training ground. Instructors should be cognizant that there are going to be people who have a harder time learning how to ground, and proper hand cuffing techniques. Now if he was given extra help by instructors, and was told to attend extra mandatory DT training and still failed than I will take my comment back. If not than my comment stands.

I believe the motto now is "1U, 2U, SEE YOU"

And no offence to you here boomerang but because of the RCMP needing so many people right now that's usually not the case. However, if you do receive 2 Us for something, ie. PDT and you are a strong cadet you are usually just backtrooped immediately. I recall a female in my troop who had a U in almost every discipline of Depot and was amazingly passing everything on her second try. She finally received 2 U's in Firearms and wasn't even sent home...she just got backtrooped right away and the next week she started with her new troop about 12 weeks back.

So even though I can't say for sure and I don't know you or your situation I have a feeling there's more to it then just PDT...

I second the last 2 comments by Argyll and jjl51.

So true that this is one side of the story. It's human nature to minimise our faults partly becauses we have been thought from a young age to be successful.

But if this is what you still want, ask for a re-insertion, Depot will send your file to your recruiting office with their recommendations. Then a decision will be made.
Best of luck to you.

Didn't you receive any information about returning from your facilitators or staffing? I believe at week 21 you should be re-inserted no earlier than the mid-term.
