Q regarding 400 series
Q regarding 400 series
Hello! Just came back from a trip down to Ottawa. It was fairly nice. Not too much traffic but anyway. As I went down the 417/416 and the eastern rural area on the 401, I spotted a few OPP members here and there and I asked myself, who runs these highways?
Is it HSD or the local detachments?
Just a curious fella.

Re: Q regarding 400 series
Local detachments - like Upper Ottawa Valley, Ottawa Traffic Grenville police those 400 series Hwys.
HET is an interdiction team. They definitely contribute a great deal to highway safety and enforcement, but their specialty is interdicting contraband.
HSD does have a couple of teams in East Region - one for sure in Napanee. They don't do strictly 400 series, they will also jump on other major routes - Highway 7 for example. They are traffic enforcement.

Ah I see.
Driving on the 417 I noticed that the speed signs are covered with garbage bags, if those weren't them then the 417 doesn't even have any! People flying at like 120, 130 lol.
Thanks!

Are those garbage bag covered signs in or near a construction zone? Just curious...

Nope. The 417 was clear right through the core.

Im from Ottawa, work in Hawkesburry detachment. Im frequently in Ottawa (weekly)...I can assure you that those signs that are covered are construction signs. They have the regular white posted 100km/h signs out there.
The only "highway" only detachment in the area would be the Ottawa OPP detachment who are the traffic unit who are responsible for the highways you asked about. Outside of Ottawa, the regional detachments will cover certain sections of the 417.

Must be.
I just feel as if there were no speed limit signs between Innes and the 416, maybe a bit earlier. It was probably me! Thanks for clearing that up though.

HSD isn't only in the GTA. Sault Ste Marie, Sudbury, Northbay all have HSD units.

So are those units within detachments?
Edit: OK, I think I solved my confusion.
Can GTA region detachments do municipal policing IF OPP was contracted to do so? IE Aurora units policing the outskirts of York & Simcoe. If yes, this means they'd have jurisdiction over 400 and that municipal area?
Bottom line: HSD does not mean a detachment is restricted to highways only.
I'm sorry, guys and gals.

OPP does not do municipal policing in large urban areas. Traffic on provincially-owned roads only. Not sure if it still works that way, but at one time if there was a serious criminal offence (e.g. murder) on such a highway, the Municipal service would step in and take over the investigation (e.g. 401 through Toronto)

Yeah I figured for that I was just talking about small rural areas IE Napanee, Caledon etc.
Re: Q regarding 400 series
OPP does both of those communities. Highway mixed with urban and rural.
