Enforcement Services and Mobile Outreach transition to Grande Prairie Police Service

Jan. 4, 2024, Grande Prairie, Alta. – As of Jan. 1, 2024, City of Grande Prairie Enforcement Services and Mobile Outreach have transitioned under the Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS).

Bringing Enforcement Services and Mobile Outreach under the GPPS is one of the many steps in the transition to a municipal police service, taking a more cohesive approach to public safety and empowering employees as a unified, collaborative team committed to serving the community.

“Our goal is to send the right people with the right solutions at the right time,” says GPPS Chief Dwayne Lakusta. “We want to leverage every available agency, group, and resource contributing to public safety to create a more integrated response model while working closely with the RCMP during this transition. Conceptually we are designing a non-traditional policing model, taking a holistic approach to community safety and wellbeing. We will develop partnerships with professionals who work on the frontlines of mental health and addiction and homelessness and embed municipal enforcement within our deployment model.”

Enforcement Services and Mobile Outreach employees will continue in their current positions, with direction and support coming from the GPPS. Changes to deployment are expected to build a more responsive service with a more robust presence in key areas.

Enforcement Services includes Bylaw Enforcement, Provincial Act Enforcement, Public Security Unit, Bicycle Registration, Community Peace Officer Traffic Enforcement, Parking Control, Vehicle for Hire Licensing, Commercial Vehicle Inspections, Animal Control, Animal Licensing, the Regional Animal Care Facility (City Animal Pound), and Automated Traffic Enforcement (Photo Enforcement).

Mobile Outreach is a diversion program focused on mitigating the impacts of street-level social disorder, addiction, and public intoxication. The program assists businesses and residents in handling their concerns related to the street-engaged population, including trespassing, loitering, disturbances, public intoxication, needle debris, and encampments.
