The RCMP is investigating after a peace officer showed up at a CPS district office in the southeast in critical condition and later died upon arrival at a local hospital.
Police say the MD of Foothills Community Peace Officer was brought to the District 8 office at 450 Midpark Way S.E. in medical distress and was taken to Rockyview Hospital.
The officer, Rod Lazenby, was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Turner Valley RCMP, RCMP Major Crimes Unit and Calgary police are investigating the officer’s death.
Investigators have secured potential scenes which include a rural residence near Turner Valley and the vehicle that the officer was transported in.
Calgary police have one person of interest in custody but have not laid any charges.
Alberta's Minister of Justice and Solicitor General Jonathan Denis released a statement on Friday.
“It is with great sadness that I express my condolences to the friends, family and colleagues of Foothills Community Peace Officer Rod Lazenby.
Tragedies such as this remind us all of the selfless acts peace and police officers make to protect our safety each and every day. On behalf of all Albertans, I want to recognize Mr. Lazenby for his service and assure his loved ones that his sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
An autopsy will be performed on the officer’s body on Monday to determine the cause of death.
Meanwhile, the front desk at the District 8 office has been closed for the rest of the day.
Police are advising members of the public to use the District 6 office at 8325 Bonaventure Drive S.E. if they need help.

In Ontario, Lazenby was an undercover RCMP officer, pretending to be a high-ranking mobster. Media reports of the 2002 murder trial for Andre J. Jeanvenne detail how Lazenby was able to deceive the Ontario man by posing as Rod Calabria, an Italian-accented member of organized crime. Lazenby testified that he spent big money on food and alcohol and even took Jeanvenne to a strip club to get him to talk.
