A Saskatchewan Mountie is dead after his police vehicle ran into a moose on a highway early Friday morning.

The accident happened just before 2 a.m. CST on Highway 14, about seven kilometres west of the town of Wilkie in the west-central part of the province.

The RCMP member has been identified as Const. Derek Pineo, 38, of the Wilkie detachment.

The sole occupant of the vehicle, Pineo was declared dead at the scene.

Pineo joined the RCMP in August of 2007 and had 4 years, 11 months of service.

He had family in Saskatchewan as well as Nova Scotia, and family members have been notified, the RCMP said Friday.

I traveled that highway every day for work. I got to know a few of the cops from Wilkie through my work, but I never got a chance to know Pineo. I am so sorry to all his colleagues for their loss.

Rest in peace officer. Thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the other members from the Wilkie, and surrounding detachments. :(

Derek was such a special, fun loving person. We here in Nova Scotia know his laughter well and his friends, school mates and "band of friends" will all miss him dearly. Everyone here are still in shock!

He loved his work, Saskatchewan and the RCMP; and we know there will be sad goodbyes on Wednesday in your province. Our thoughts are with you.

Sunday will be our Nova Scotia Day to say goodby to our trusted friend, companion and great buddy. There are so many great, funny stories about Derek that we will always remember him with a warm grin and a laugh that filled a room. Our hearts and love go out to Natasha, the children and both families. Nova Scotia opens their arms and welcomes you all home xxx0000
