Hello Everyone,

This forum is for Student Border Service Officer for upcoming year of summer 2020. We can discuss and track progress here.

Has anyone received any email from them after applying or invitation for any tests yet?
Hey guys,

Congrats on embarking on your CBSA journey. Happy to answer any questions anyone may have as I've been in your shoes (or should I say boots...) before.

Hello sir, I would like to know if we need to be prepared for any type of physical exam like PARE or something during medical exam or any other time?

Ma'am will do ;) and yes, you will have to pass the PARE prior to being accepted to OITP and you will have to complete it twice in Rigaud as well. See if there are practice locations in your area if you are concerned - I did it about 3 weeks prior to my actual testing date just so that I was familiar with it and able to practice on the components that I was struggling with.
Former SBSO turned full-time BSO. I've been through it all and happy to share my experiences with others looking to get into CSBA as a temporary or full-time career.

More to the point for SBSOs. As far as I know there is no physical requirement other than being declared medically fit with the CAT III for the position as a student. That's for the Prairie region, others may vary but I doubt it. You will have to do CDT which is fairly physically demanding, so I would suggest working on your cardio anyway. And like Galadriel said, if you plan on become full fledged, you will have to do the PARE.

For SBSOs your Port will send you wherever they are holding the training. Usually it's at whatever Region's training centre. CDT in the Prairies used to be in Winnipeg, but I think students have been going elsewhere the last couple years. I've done mine in both Winnipeg and Mississauga (re-cert).
Once you're hired by the port, you'll be notified where you are going/if you have to travel for CDT. Don't stress too much about it. The course itself is lots of fun if you're in decent shape, and you'll learn lots. The instructors are all really good across the country, so it's always a good time.

Yes, my apologies, I thought you were referring to full-time BSO positions. CDT is fun for the SBSO positions, it's not as physically demanding as the PARE but having some athletic ability would be helpful - just don't get too stressed out as that can affect your actions!

The re-certs definitely don't make sense location wise as I just did mine in BC and I'm in Southwestern Ontario. Pretty sure they just send you to the next available date when you're FT.

Just completed my interview for SBSO! Not allowed to talk about it so I won't. Waiting for my results now! I was also instructed before the interview to submit paperwork for my security clearance.

Hey everyone!

I just got an email to get my Category III health assessment as well as my CDT test. Anyone who has taken these can fill me in on what to expect exactly? Much appreciated! :)

I had applied back mid November and still have not heard from anybody, has this occurred with anybody else?

Applied Nov 23 and haven't heard a single peep. Probably should've applied when the applications opened, but hopefully they haven't filled the spots yet.

I feel like a lot of it may be luck of the draw lottery picks anyways. I've applied every year for the past 4 or 5 years and haven't heard back once.

Hopefully that’s not the case. Was really looking forward to the opportunity but I suppose it won’t be happening. Oh well, better luck next year.

For those wondering, most POEs hire for May, this is different Port to Port and Region to Region, but if you haven't received an interview yet, it may be passed the date of no return since the Agency has to run clearance checks etc.

I wish you all the best in your applications! Don't give up if this is a job you think you really want to do! Often it is the luck of the draw, but depending which port you go to they only hire small numbers every year, especially when you consider how many people apply. It's very competitive. If you don't get selected this summer, and plan on a couple more years of school, take the time to make yourself a more competitive applicant and work hard in whatever job you have/get to build excellent references for yourself. Volunteer, study, grow as a person. If you think CBSA is a career for you as a full BSO and you're coming to your last year of school. APPLY TO BECOME A REGULAR BSO!!!!!!!!! It takes easily 4x longer than the student process can take. So don't get hung up on this one if you don't make the cut. Apply, apply, and keep applying! These processes take for.ev.er!

Keep the faith!
