Columbo, why on earth would seeking employment as a security guard be a bad thing? I think it's the best job a student can get if they have serious aspirations for a career in law enforcement. Security work is undoubtedly a GOOD stepping stone -- or a step in the right direction...
In fact, I spoke with a local chief policing recruiter and although he mentioned that not all security work is looked upon favourably -- specific reference to infrastructure security -- he did, however, specifically note that security work that entails any engagement with public as a good to thing to have for job experience.

Get a job doing customer service. That would be far and above working as a security guard for experience.
When things get bad, I take comfort in knowing they could always be worse.
When things get worse, I take comfort in knowing they can only get better.

This. You will learn far more about my job working the courtesy desk at Wall-Mart than you EVER will as a security guard. I can teach a chimp handcuffing or any other thing you would learn as a security guard.
You are more likely to have negative police interactions as a security guard or worse yet an LPO. There's an LPO in my Area that wants to be a cop, and NEVER will because of her brutal work as an LPO.

You could always asks recruiter what you think might help you.
I also believe Edmonton police has a section on their recruiting site that outlines things than people in high school should do to be competitive in the application process.
