Anyone else in the application process with the OPP? Been a few months and trying to compare updated timelines.

I'm currently waiting to hear back about testing and other back ground checks etc. I had my interview in mid November then I went for psych eval in the beginning of December. I know things like this take time but it seems like this is taking a really long time 😂 I'm probably just impatient.

My partner at work applied for the Lindsay posting and he’s currently having his references contacted last I checked.

Hey folks,

I was just curious to know legitimately how is the atmosphere at TTC for special constables?

A few people I know have been given offers (although delayed to Covid). These questions are for current or previous TTC Special Constables:

What are the scheduled hours for shifts?

Where is home base where you start your shift?

How does the management work with front line staff?

Talks of all your overtime disappearing with this huge hire?

General atmosphere amongst the team?

Talks of what these new hires will be used for? From what I gather, there isn’t much need for patrol vehicles?

Thanks in advance and if you wish to private message me, please do so!

I was told that I wasn't moving on in the selection process after the psych interview for a PC position and as a result have to wait a year to reapply across Ontario. I have always been interested in various special constable positions however am wondering if my limitation extends to special constable positions as well?

It really depends but you just have to try. A few special constable agencies don’t require psych test. TPS specials don’t have psych either.

Toronto Housing does not require a Psych testing either. Hiring big numbers right now.

All do respect. Would you really want to be a special constable working without a sidearm while almost every person living down there is carrying a sidearm themselves. Nope !

And, every person carrying a cell phone camera looking to get rich

Best decision I’ve made leaving the jail for this career. Never looked back. And there’s nobody hiding out on night shift here like the jail. When I left working the SHU to come here people thought I was crazy. I guess the 20 or so employees that also left the jail to come here are all crazy? No other special Constable agency in Toronto can does what we do. I get it, it’s scary to think about what we do without a sidearm but man this place has amazing benefits.

Wow, just speaks volumes about corrections and it’s leadership.

I’m happy you are doing well. corrections isn’t a career in my option in this current state of them being in crisis.

Trust me, I believe being a special constable is very rewarding career where you can help people out and so on.

Toronto Housing is an agency that I may look at, if in a couple years I decide to try and be a Special again.

Every SC agency has it's own perks/pitfalls... you can dip your toe in the policing world water (lots of arrests, court, apprehensions) ..."action" if you will.. and you can use this to springboard into a service at some point

OR

Depending on your goals and what you want....you can settle in, have a good..reliable schedule...great pension (varies between agencies)... great salary and just go with the flow being able to bounce between the policing world and whatever the organizational goals of your employer

I did 3 years in Corrections and have been out for 2 as a Special... I've had more arrests in that time than some PCs outside major cities...

It has it's challenges ...but the need for a chunk on your hip isn't nearly as important as some would believe.... your tact and situational awareness/alertness is far more beneficial... to be honest...specials would much rather have a CEW than a chunk.. but that's a whole long winded discussion.

Good luck with wherever you end up!
