Grad is tomorrow. Pretty neat....

I wouldn't be here right now if I decided not to do PRK surgery. Roughly 1/2 a day after my protective contacts were removed I had the epithelium rip open on my right eye. I assure you it was one of the worst pains I had ever felt.. and that's comparing to broken limbs, playing a season of basketball on a stress fracture in my leg, football with broken fingers, and growing up with 3 sisters.

Yea it's expensive. Yea its commitment. Yea its 100% worth it. The way I looked at it- even if I didnt get in to the rcmp, it would be a huge cost saving move vs fulltime glasses/contacts. Plus it is amazing to wake up every day and be able to see clearly.

Contact recruiting like I did and ask if you need to have the vision test cleared before you apply. They said it was a requirement for me... yet a year or two earlier they were still allowing applicants to complete the surgery during recruitment. They were blunt in telling me that if I handed in vision test documents that were dated after my application date that I would be deferred. So if your serious about the application dont sewer yourself by being hasty in applying

Point #1- make a phone call or two and save yourself the headaches.
Point #2- I'd do the surgery again even if I knew I would have complications.
Point #3- live your life. If you swirl your life around the rcmp and depot you'll just drive yourself bonkers
Have fun tomorrow. The hard work starts right after that. I only had 1 day to get home then I started on Wednesday morning. Been great so far. Lots of learning. I was lucky and got a good trainer and a good watch.

Has anyone in recent weeks, besides the couple of guys I have already talked to , gotten their clearances after a security interview? Just curious to compare time lines. This wait is killing me. Did my interview in early December.

"... the RCMP recruiters will be waiting outside for you with your gun and badge. You'll bypass depot and go directly to your plainclothes assignment in O Division."...
As someone who didn't bypass Depot, but did do multiple postings in plainclothes in O Division, (in addition to other parts of the country) this sounds like the seventh ring of hell. People have such unrealistic expectations of what plainclothes police work actually is, and what plainclothes work in Federal policing units - especially in provinces where the RCMP doesn't do anything other than Federal policing - is exponentially more boring and a further departure from what expectations are from people on the outside looking in.

To boil things down, skipping Depot and going straight to plainclothes, especially in O or C Divisions, would be a nightmare, not just because you would have no training, no job experience, and you'd be dropped into a team environment where it's literally sink or swim and failing to pull your weight pretty much as soon as you hit the ground is going to immediately alienate you from all the other people you work with. The subplot to all this is that when it becomes clear you have no idea what you're doing, there aren't any GD positions in the area to send you to in order to learn, because there aren't any in those provinces.

I know way more guys who've done GD elsewhere in addition to plainclothes in O Division who would much rather work GD than 98% of the positions in O Div. While I'm not in GD at the moment, I wouldn't be upset if they told me tomorrow that I was going back to GD again, it's probably the most fun anyone will have in their careers, and where your best stories come from. No one cares about the O Div guy's stories about how one time he wrote a production order on a file, or the 4 arrests he's made in the last ten years, they want to hear about dudes chasing down bad guys and putting them in cuffs.
I certainly don't want "4 arrests in 10 years" or a desk job of any kind. The truth is, I would never want to leave GD for the reasons you stated. The illusion of an easy job keeps me going on the treadmill but that's all. As a 50-year-old chasing my 3rd career and true calling, I realize I have limited time to give. I'll serve in GD until retirement if I'm blessed with that opportunity.

My security clearance got issued today! It was a very welcoming email before writing my three exams today. My recruiting analyst said she would update me whenever she has more information. Am I correct to assume that my next steps are Final Suitability (which has never been previously mentioned to me so I assume I have not received it) and then a potential troop offer?

Best of luck everybody!

That’s awesome! Not too familiar with the latter stages of the process as it’s so different for everyone regarding when everything gets done but it looks like you’re on your way to that final step!

It's a pretty safe assumption that you're nearly there. :) Depending on how far ahead they are setting things up for Depot, it could still take a few weeks before you get an offer, but it sounds like you're in the home stretch! Congrats!

Thank you! It's very exciting to be in that last stretch. Congratulations yourself! Best of luck at Depot in April.

These interviews are given to applicants whom they need more explanation on certain things, as well for their clearance to be expedited, its becoming more and more common as the amount of applicants increases. If I am wrong, im sure someone can explain it better!
