I am from Calgary. I was told by my recruiter that the limit for compensated driving is 650 Kms. Calgary is 740+. I was given the option to drive, but the mileage would not be compensated and the RCMP insurance would not cover me during travel. I was also advised that upon graduating, I would have 1 day to get home and get things ready for movers. If for some reason I was flown home by the RCMP from depot (injury, etc), I would be responsible for the costs to have my vehicle shipped back home.

This information is current as of this month. Something to consider.

One girl in my troop got sent home and she had just drove her vehicle to depot the weekend prior. So she flew home just to take another flight back to Regina and drive back to Ontario! I imagine there was lots of time to think on the drive home!

Fair enough.
Asked my buddy about this and he said yeah, it wasn't covered but he did it anyway and was fine so I suppose it's up to you on what you want to do. I didn't expect this to get so convoluted. I was just sharing what 3 other members all said for me to do if I make it. Evidently there are some factors to consider.

My friend is currently in Depot, about a 1/3 of the way complete. He drove from Vancouver Island, and has a troopmate who was called Monday evening for a Wednesday start. I am not sure if they covered his driving costs, but I don't think he cared too much be honest.

Probably not. It’s worth it in my opinion. Convenient, and gives a chance to help your troop mates out as well.

Nothing is being convoluted; people are having a discussion on something that is a fair point to discuss on. It’s how forums work especially in a chit chat thread :)

You’re almost there though! Exciting times.

"Help your troop mates out"..... Hahahahahaha...... I use my truck to get away from my troopmates and keep my sanity. Honestly I would be way more stressed out than I am if I didn't have my truck. Every weekend I go off base to Tim's for a breakfast. I'll sometimes take a troopmate or 2 that don't drive me crazy. If you don't bring a vehicle there are very cheap car rentals available. It is actually cheaper to rent a vehicle for a day than to take a taxi back and forth for what you want to do.

The RCMP will cover you up to 650km as that is the max you are allowed to drive in 1 day. They will only cover 1 days travel. I live 702km from Depot. I get absolutely nothing for gas.

Keep in mind posting requirements at the end. I graduate on a Monday. I drive home on Tuesday. I start my first shift at 0700 on Wednesday. You may not have time to drive 2 days to your posting. If you are not moving they are only required to give you 1 day for travel.

Hey,
For someone at Depot currently or recently. Does anyone have a song list for the Depot band? I play trumpet and figured some of my prep time could be spent practising some of the songs. Sheet music would be better but even a song list I can work with.

Mark nailed it.
I drive troopmates- when it is convenient. If you have a vehicle be ready to have several people trying to be your buddy strictly because you have wheels.

By the same token, if they drive you, pay for their lunch, buy them a beer etc. Just don't use them.

I live in Regina and wish I didn’t have to drive around this city! Haha! If you have nice things don’t bring them here, lots of road damage and smashed in car windows to send your deductible soaring!
