It makes a mess out of things would be the best way i can describe it.
Be professional and methodical. Take ownership of the situation. Look, listen and understand what is really being said and you will never have to walk away from an incident wondering if you missed something. Make every contact with the public count.

When I was on a ride along an officer suggested that I read this book.

Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement: A Guide for Officers and Their Families

Anyone ever read it?

Many of us have read it, it is handed out routinely now on some courses in my service. I've send my copies along to friends to read as well.

It's an easy read. Every police officer should read it. Pulls no punches on what a police career can do to you it you let things get to you.

So, it is safe to say that this book should be on the suggested reading list?

Should be mandatory reading. Similar book is "I love a cop: What Police Families need to know" excellent and insightful.

Interesting. I have yet to read it, but my wife has (was indeed given out during training for all of us). It was suggested to us that we wait until a few years on before we read it, but maybe I'll crack it open early.
