Intermittent Fasting/Lean Gains

Postby Dogsitter » Sun Sep 23, 2012 12:40 pm

This seems to be all the rage these days. Personally I've been on the program about a year and a half and can never see myself going back to the 5-7 small meals a day. I've received a couple PMs about it so I figured I would start a thread for any and all IF/LG discussion/questions. Martin Berkhan's site is the "bible" of IF so check it out if it's something that interests you. www.leangains.com

Maybe if you rephrased the question?

This 'I.F' stuff really works! I'm going into week #3, and I feel great!!!

Read the link Dogsitter posted; and or 'fasting twins', 'natural gains' via youtube.

I took a brief look at the site but didn't get too far into it. Can someone give me the cliff notes of the theory?

+1.

What I did glean from it was that you're better off not eating in the morning and eating a larger meal mid-day or for dinner.

Cliffs are basically don't take any calories in for 16 hours, which people usually do by skipping breakfast, and take in your alotted calories within an 8 hour period. And train fasted for the most part.

Studies have shown some benefits such as increased protein synthesis due to insulin spike, more production of HGH, higher metabolic rate. Studies have also shown that fat loss from cardio in the 12-16 hour period of the fast targets the alpha fat receptor moreso than beta fat receptors(the real hard fat to lose on your gut). Anecdotally I can say I have increased energy, losing fat is easy as hell compared to small meals throughout the day.

How do you find your training is, as far as strength and endurance, when doing so w/o eating? Do you get as good of a workout? See as good gains? Etc.

Training has been great. Gains have been steady. I've never been heavier this lean. The first few times took some getting used to but after a while I would rather train fasted than on a full stomach.

Very interesting.....I find that I get headaches if I go too long w/o food.....and super grouchy LOL.

I think if I was to give it a go, I'd have to ease into it.

If I'm not mistaken...and I'd have to check it over again... but I think Martin recommended a 15/9 hour fast/feeding window for women. Something to do with grehlin etc. Also the fasting window is no calories. BCAAs, coffee, calorie free soda, etc... is all fair game. I always drank a ton of black coffee anyway so it was an easy adjustment. I just cut out the morning bagel and waited a little longer for lunch.

So if you sleep 8 hours, is that included in the fast time? So if I fell asleep at 11 pm and slept til 7, would my first meal (based on the 15/9 rule) be at 3pm?
