What do you guys use to track your running distance/ speed?

Postby genesis563 » Mon Jul 25, 2011 8:40 pm

I'm looking for a device to track my runs and i'm wondering what you guys use? I used to use the nike+iPod sensor combo but i lost it and my iPod hit the crapper so that option is out of question. I just recently bought an 11$ pedometer but it's not quite what i want. Even though it tracks everything i want (ie. distance, speed, average pace, etc.) it's never properly calibrated so the information isn't right. I'm heading off for BMQ in 4 weeks so i will need a nice rugged watch, so if anyone can recommend one that can track my runs as well without necessarily breaking the bank, that would be great. Otherwise i'm open to all suggestions.
Thanks.

If you have a newer phone with GPS capabilities, you can try this site out.
MapMyRun

They have the application for most major phone platforms... iPhone, BBerry, Android...
Find them here... MapMyRun Apps

The site is also a good way to track progress, routes, etc. without the use of the device.
You can manually add your runs, rides, whatever in it...

This may not help but I use www.runningmap.com to map out runs and then just time myself with my stop watch. It is free and easy!

I use 2 things. On my iPhone, I have Nike gps, it works great....although you did say yours hit the crapper.

I also bought a Garmin Forerunner a couple years back, which is really nice. Cost under $200 bucks (which included delivery). It tracks my times, distances, heart rate, incline and more. You can input all the data onto your computer as well. Sometimes I use the one, sometimes the other, depends where I'm running.

Doesn't really help because the whole iphone thing, but I LOVE the RunKeeper app on my phone. I paid for it, but it's free now, and I bought a heart rate monitor for it as well. Works great, I have all my runs and hikes in there and it's awesome!

That's the one that I got. Works great, and everything gets mapped together with the info from the app (speed, distance, etc) so you can compare. There's step counters and stuff for cycling you can buy too, but I just use the heart rate monitor.

I have a Garmin Forerunner 405, not sure if they still make it or not. I set it up once to show my time, distance and pace in min/km and it's been set that way since. It has a USB stick to download the history into your computer. There's a HR monitor but I haven't bothered with it yet.

I'll second this. I have my wife's old Iphone3 and it can take a while to load and think about the program, but when it starts to work, it works great!

I just don't trust it much, it says I run slower and shorter than I initially thought. Which makes me think the darned GPS must be lying!!! ;)

And the scale said I weigh more than I thought as well.... I am surrounded by liars!!! :cuss:

That all said, have fun on BMQ, glad I don't have to do that again!

I didn't mention in my post that runkeeper.com also has iPhone and Android clients that will all sync automatically to their site.

Thanks for the responses guys, i finally opted to go with the nike+ bracelet/chip combo. I'm not a fan of having two seperate devices for one purpose (the chip is easy to lose) but it has been working great for what i need it to do, and it was just in the right price range for me so i'm happy. Thanks to all.
