The Town of Morinville Municipal Enforcement is collecting used and expired soft body armour. We're working with the Vests for Life project in the USA to have them donated and shipped to their office. https://www.vestforlife.com/. Once we have collected a fair amount, we will be coordinating a shipping container to have it sent to the Vests for Life office in Tennessee. The premise behind the program is to donate body armour to those officers who are not provided it by their employer or agency. They will only provide vests to sworn peace officers that have been given arrest powers by their state. This is not a common theme in Canada, however numerous small agencies and municipal agencies in the USA do not provide armour to their officers.
We currently have approximately 110 vests donated by the following agencies: Alberta Health Services, Covenant Health, NAIT, University of Alberta, and the Town of Morinville.
If anyone is interested in donating more vests in Alberta, please send us an e-mail and we can coordinate your pickup or drop off of the items. We're currently storing the items at the Morinville Enforcement office. Also, if anyone has any new boxes they could donate, which would be large and wide enough to accommodate vests laying flat, we are also looking for those.
The same initiative was undertaken by the AACPO in southern Alberta in 2015 with positive results. https://calgaryherald.com/news/local-ne ... o-u-s-cops
