One Item You Wish You Had

Postby Jeff Downman » Fri Mar 28, 2014 5:39 pm

Hi,

I am not a police officer, but a friend of mine just got hired by Toronto and will start her pre OPC training in April. Id like to get her some kind of congratulatory gift that she could use in her career. I am just wondering what you guys and gals out there found to be extremely useful that you ended up purchasing yourself? any and all advice is appreciated. Thank you everyone.

A decent flashlight.
I'm not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but let's take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself.

Agreed.

Good pair of gloves too.

A uniform that fits. Not the imported garbage we have now.
If you do not have access to the private side please do not contact me. I do not give employment advice other than what is publicly posted.

A good quality folding knife.
Please remember that the man makes the uniform and not the other way around.

Spend good money on a good knife. Don't trust your life to a $10 knife.

Agree on the flashlight! I received one as a gift when I graduated OPC. It's wonderful.
I will NOT respond to PMs from those not belonging to the private side.

Pete B can give better advice on the flashlight then I could, but if you search the forum you might find some info.

Toronto issues a flashlight and provides free batteries. The only time I've ever used a knife on the job was to tear open an evidence bag. I carry scissors in my duty bag.

Actually, of the hundreds of dollars I've spent on things I thought I couldn't live without, I don't think I've ever used any of it. I ended up giving all the stuff away to new recruits, who in turn never used it. You don't even need a ticket book holder anymore because everything is electronic.

I'd recommend the search gloves. They are not issued and she will probably use them.

Flashlight

Some recommendations:
The Pelican 7060 is carried by a lot of individuals I know, but personally, I find it way to bulky and expensive for a belt light.
The Klarus XT11 is my personal carry, though The Fenix TK11 was my previous go to.

Toronto really doesn't issue hatch gloves? That's wild; let's do a search on an individual with needles, knives and substances all with the protection of rubber latex!
