Socks while on duty

Postby dhpsask » Sun Mar 16, 2014 6:30 pm

What socks are good for duty wear and why? I want to take good care of my feet now that I will be spending long periods of time on them outside.

I wear Point 6 brand, merino wool boot socks. $22/pair.
It seems any other type of sock and I get sore feet / blisters.

Do you wear a liner sock underneath?

This is somewhat related to socks, more to boots - if you stuff your boots/shoes with crumpled newspaper between shifts it helps them to dry out; extends the life of the leather and reduces odor, etc. Ideally you should alternate pairs so they aren't worn every day.

Nope, just the single sock. I used to wear two pairs of cheaper socks before I found the merino wool.
Kiwi fresh force (odor) and black quick shine (polish).
Green apple scented lysol spray for the soles after working particularly dirty locations.
KCCO. Wake up. Kick butt. Repeat.

I buy the thick black work socks from Wally World. 4$ a pair and I have zero issues! And frankly I'm a miserable pain in the ass if my feet are uncomfortable.
Please remember that the man makes the uniform and not the other way around.

I wear the 5.11 socks that come free when you order boots. They are pretty good. Too thin for long periods outside in the winter though.

Smartwool Trekking Heavy Crew Socks from MEC. Super comfortable for us guys/gals that spend a great deal of time on our feet with full kit. $23.50/pair. By far, MEC has the largest selection of wool socks and hybrids that I have seen in one spot. These socks, in particular, have a cushioned bottom that is very comfortable.

Product Number: 5020-361
Made in USA

Weight: 81g (Small)

These fully-cushioned trekking socks provide maximum shock absorption when you're wearing stiffer boots or carrying heavy loads.

An additional layer of wool yarn is used (rather than nylon) to reinforce and strengthen in high-impact areas. It makes them overall more durable, and provides long-term impact cushioning and comfort.

Made of 80% wool, 19% nylon, 1% elastic.
Ribbed knit leg construction.
Elasticized arch brace helps to keep the sock in place.
Flat knit toe seam and flat knit side panel.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I will buy a pair of each and try them both out.

For a less-expensive option, Walmart sells black diabetic socks (I can't remember the brand name) for about $7-10/pair, and they come in extra-large sizes that even fit my stupidly-large feet. I've worn them in both construction and tac boots and find it makes a huge difference, especially when walking for 7-10 hours/day.

I wear Under Armour socks year round. They are a bit thicker than usual sport socks, and tend to hold up a bit better. Plus, they don't stink as much as regular socks do. In the winter, if it's really cold, I'll wear my old CF issued wool socks over top of them.
When things get bad, I take comfort in knowing they could always be worse.

I've been wearing compression socks that were provided by my doctor. If you currently have work benefits, consult with your physician . They are very expensive or otherwise I would never have got them.
