I am trying to find the whole video that originally aired, that shows the man get hit by the cruiser.

The individual, if I recall correctly a couple of days later broke the window of his hospital room, jumped out and died... :ponder:

That was my old parter that hit him with the cruiser. :D Anyway, he did smash a hospital window and jump to his death.
Ah good ol' Darwin.

rationale? I am not sure but here is my take from it.

If I remember correctly it occurred on Young St. during the day, TONS of civilians around that wanted a close up view, no tasers were near (at that time I think the closest one was in Scarlem), the media was EVERYWHERE, store owners and customers inside and nearby. I would imagine that firing at the man with the knife would have a huge possibility of injury to the public and other officers from cross fire. After lots of verbal commands, attempting to spray him (i believe, not quite sure) and realizing the taser was a good 20 minutes away the car was the next best option.

Ya, I follow you. Service pistol is certainly not a favourable option with a poor background.

Dude this thread is way old, and the cop in the car has retired.
If you do not have access to the private side please do not contact me. I do not give employment advice other than what is publicly posted.
