Re: RCMP Commissioner issued sidearm
He was advised to carry one for his trip to Afghanistan, it doesn't say he was issued one to carry while at home. I personally don't see the issue with carrying a pistol in the sandbox. I've never been there, but I certainly wouldn't want to be empty handed, even with heavily armed escorts. Besides, CSIS does it

Just picked up the new flashes tonight to put on the #1 dress uniform to be worn at the CPPOM later this month.

Personally if the Taliban managed to get through the Commissioners CP Team, the only thing that pistol would be good for would be to put one in your own head......
I'm sure after a couple days in the insurgents "Care" death would be a preferred alternative..... Theyre just gonna saw his head off and put on Al Jazzera anyways....

Wow. Talked to two CBSA guys this last week, one of them a collector and they had no idea it was even made up yet. Must be issuing them like the new pistols

Glad to see the CBC is putting its tax payer funding to good use once again (like really she couldnt google ASP??). The comments were hilarious.
Re: RCMP Commissioner issued sidearm
I realize it was just for over seas. I wonder if this had more to do with his impage while there. I also think there might be a bigger concern of him wearing the RCMP uniform. Perhaps we could hear form some RCMP members on want the membeship thinks about this, if anything.

There is about 20 pages ref this matter on the CGN site. Some are for it, some are against it. As you can imagine everyone on there is mostly against it, for the fact that he and I quote "is not law enforcement, and doest hold an RPAL, and doesnt have an ATC" yadda yadda.
I don't care who you are,. you go to a place where you can get shot at, and its the norm. Just give the man a gun.
A lot of other people commented on why he was in a RCMP uniform as well. BLAH

Re: RCMP Commissioner issued sidearm
Really, who gives a flying fuck?
As long as he has taken enough training so that he doesn't shoot blue.
As for him wearing the uniform.....we've had a few Commissioners who weren't really police officers. For the record, the Queen hasn't gone through Depot and the GG hasn't been in the military but they can still wear the serge and CF dress uniform.
I would suggest that anyone who says that either of them wearing the uniform somehow diminishes the pride of regular cops and soldiers is nit-picking. And has a self-esteem issue. And doesn't have anything bigger to worry about in their lives.
I've been through both basic training in the military and Depot. I really don't care if the GG or the Commissioner wanna rock a uniform.

but they don't. And that's the point.
When things get bad, I take comfort in knowing they could always be worse.

I don't seem to recall members of the RCMP band every going through depot... That being said, I don't know how much weight can be put behind the arguement that because he went to Afghanistan he should be armed. No other politician is (as he claims he is), and a 9mm S&W is hardly the appropriate hardware to be carrying going into a war zone. Just won't match the opponents AK47 if you get into a firefight.

(nods in agreement)
The head of Canada's national police force can be unsworn and carry an uzi for all I care. By virtue of his office he is a peace officer and therefore doesn't require a PAL, ATC or anything else as far as I am concerned, to carry a firearm.
I would rather all of our bosses wore uniforms on a daily basis, regardless of whether they manage a uniformed or non-uniformed division. It will *begin* to instill a sense of espirit de corps in our organization.

The current GG has worn the CF uniform. In a former era, it was commonplace for the GG to wear a military uniform. Hence the title: Governor **General**. Several members of the Royal Family have worn the CF uniform in their respective roles as Colonels-in-Chief, etc. They are more than entitled to, having been commissioned officers in the UK. The Prince of Wales is para qualified. Prince Andrew earned his South Atlantic Medal flying helicopters from the same ship as my uncle. The Queen wore her uniform when she was in the women's auxiliary in WWII.
Any member of the RF and any GG or LG can wear a CF uniform proudly as far as I am concerned. They do more respect to it then some of the members I've served with, and certainly more than many of the politicians who have had the responsibility of being minister of defence.
