Internets

Postby kelly gruber » Thu Sep 10, 2009 9:15 pm

Question:

How many of you (ideally those of you already working in a law enforcement capacity) have access to the internet on the job? If you do, do you find it a useful tool that helps you do your job better (e.g. useful during an investigation), or just an effective time-waster? Bit of column A, bit of column B? Could you do your job without it?

*edit:
probably posted this in the wrong forum, my bad.

Yes our office has access to the net, but pretty strict rules that it has to be for work purposes (it is monitored by IT, I'm not sure how closely ... don't really want to find out). Use it most often for looking up addresses and phone numbers. From time to time for things like legislation and case law. Facebook is a big no-no.

Only selected computers have access and they are very helpful from my experience.

We have limited internet.

Good for:
- canada 411
- mapquest
- weather
- Ontario elaws
- criminal code
- dangerous goods

We have access to the internet on one CPU in the office only. It is monitored by the brass, as far as I know.

We need it to get the electronic versions of warrants from the province of QC online, as they are updated often enough. There is a password and user ID to get to the warrant page, so don't bother trying to have access to them for fun.

Don't think it's a top secret question and answer. Anyways, we have filters as well but it's useful for looking up values of items and when planes are due to land at the local airport.

We will have about the same access levels as OPP2, I use it all the time at home as I work on the road for the most part. It has led to a bunch of seizures and fines.

Actually Pacific BSO yes it is a private question.

I'm not going to waste time explaining why it really isn't that sophisticated.

Policing is a lot like pissing into a dark black pair of pants. You get that nice warm feeling but almost noone notices.

Then obviously you have no idea how they're even utilized. And I'm not talking about looking up what appropriate taxes to charge a traveller, flight times, or your bloody personal Facebook page and email.

All this talk of the internet and computers reminds me of a great Homer line.

Jim, such an assumer. Makes me laugh everytime you post, telling new posters to fuck off. Hopefully you don't say that to people you pull over. This is who I think of everytime I see your posts.

I have yet to tell a new poster to fuck off.

As for assuming, you assume I actually pull people over.
