Young couple swarmed by three teenage girls
Jack Keating, Canwest News Service

A young couple waiting for a bus with their three-year-old son were swarmed by three teenage girls in an "outrageous and totally unacceptable" attack in downtown Abbotsford, B.C.

The attack at about 4 p.m. Monday at Montrose Avenue and Laurel Street began when the three teens asked the young mom for a cigarette. She told them they were too young to smoke.

"These three young girls first pushed the woman down and began punching and kicking at her," Abbotsford Const. Casey Vinet said. "They pulled clumps of her hair out.

"And when the boyfriend intervened, they turned on him and began yelling and screaming at him and spitting on him."

A passing bus driver called police, who arrested the girls at the scene.

The three, aged 13 to 15, are facing assault charges. Const. Vinet said they are known to police. They were released into the custody of their guardians.

"The swarming of this couple is outrageous and totally unacceptable behaviour," Const. Vinet said. "Hopefully these teens will be held accountable in a meaningful way that protects the public."

When asked if people should be concerned waiting for a bus in the downtown core, Const. Vinet said: "We don't get a lot of reports of attacks at bus stops. That being said, we suspect there are more confrontations than we hear about.

"It is in an area that is well frequented by drug users."

Abbotsford residents waiting for the bus at the stop Wednesday said it's a bad area.

"I'm here every week and I kind of feel a little bit nervous sometimes," Gail Shaw, 33, said. "Last week there was a rat right here underneath my feet. There's a lot of street people. It can be unsafe depending on who's around."

Others said the area is frequented by prostitutes and people smoking crack.

My view is that these young offenders are good kids, but get lost on the wrong path; the sooner they are found, the easier it is to get them back on the right path with the least amount of damage and resources.

I concur (word of the day calendar)

As well, I think we should examine the role that racism and it's inherent exclusion for these poor kids may have played.

This also makes a stronger case for banning handguns right across Canada, target shooters, hunters, and collectors, had a large role to play in this crime.

ZING!

If these girls had done that to my girlfriend there may have been enough left over to identify the remains. More than likely not however.

I say it is the video games and tv.

this incident took place very close to home and I have to agree with Arctic. I walk in this area with my wife, my 6 mo old son and my dog and they are very lucky is was not me and my family they approached.

I blame people who believe that young offenders are good kids who get lost on the wrong path.

Way to ignore the jab at your signature. At some point you should change it or defend it.

I'm pretty good at ignoring people.

I'll see what I can come up with.
