She had me until the last three sentences. The only thing police and fire have in common is that we both drive vehicles with lights and sirens. And the fireguys always demand wage parity with police, so I guess two things.

Measure out the distance, whatever it is, 6 feet I think, then add six inches and train with that until you always clear the longer distance. The regular distance will be a piece of cake.

If there's enough reason for someone to be sitting in my car, they're getting a pat down - if the courts want to toss the gun or the drugs that I find and deliberate about if it was reasonably necessary or not, that's just fine.

There is nothing saying that once you start applying, you can't stop until you're hired. Obviously the stars aren't lining up for you just now so you'd be wise to change focus for a while, I'd say.
