Re: Encrypted scanners

For the first few years after I started, we had analog radios that anyone with a scanner could listen to. Now we have digital radios that a local scanner group hates because it is supposedly unmonitorable by a scanner.

Re: Surrey Community Patrol Officers

I had the pleasure of chatting with these guys for a few minutes yesterday at work. They seemed to be very professional and wanting to make the community a better place. Hopefully they will get more duties added as time goes.

Re: RCMP auxiliary officers furious with proposed changes

In Vancouver, the VPD has a Traffic Authority Unit as well as Community Safety Officers. Both are sworn Special Municipal Constables. Maybe Toronto should utilize something like that? Having said that, I believe there are still call outs for Regular Members for movie shoots, etc... In BC, Security ...

Re: RCMP auxiliary officers furious with proposed changes

Provincial offences officers could be deployed at construction sites instead of paid-duty officers. Sorry why can't security officers be doing that? Train them in traffic control and bill the cost to the construction firms. Why do you need a police officer or provincial offences officer to direct t...

Re: Surrey Community Patrol Officers

Exactly. Worse of all, I didn't have cuffs NOR a vest.. and working in some sketchy neighborhoods, plain stupid on my part. LP can be pretty dangerous - organized crime, tough guy shitrats, career thieves, homeless people with diseases, weapons, etc. Unless they want you to passively arrest people ...

Re: Surrey Community Patrol Officers

I did LP for a few months without AST.. Never again. That sounds like a bad experience. They didn't expect you to go hands-on did they? I was bouncing and wanted to branch out with security. Tried LPO.. I wasn't a fan. Risk of getting stabbed for $12.00 an hour... Pass. Check this video out: m

Re: Surrey Community Patrol Officers

Re-reading the ad it says they want applicatants to have the Bylaw Enforcement and Investigative Skills course. Having read that it's probably likely that they won't be security guards. As for UOF tools, some bylaw officers in BC have spray/baton and some don't. Does anyone know if Surrey Bylaw has ...

Re: Surrey Community Patrol Officers

It wouldn't make sense not or have Bylaw or other authority. At least that way they can address some of the issues in Surrey. Good question about UOF tools. Do the current Surrey Bylaw Officers carry UOF tools? Security guard can already have Batons, cuffs and vests. Not the be all end all, but sti...

Surrey Community Patrol Officers

Has anyone heard about this program? Right now I see Commissionaires on foot, but from what it says these new officers will be reporting to the manager of Bylaw Enforcement. Community Patrol Officers City of Surrey The City of Surrey is a place of innovative transformation and accelerated growth - w...

Re: Your opinion - By-law/MLEO Uniforms, PPE and Vehicles

If the vest is at the officer's personal expense, that sucks. The Union should go for vests paid for by the employer, during bargaining. If they say it's "too aggressive" then go for an internal carrier. At my work it's in our CBA that they pay for a vest and give us both the internal and ...

Re: Your opinion - By-law/MLEO Uniforms, PPE and Vehicles

You're not going to see bylaw Officers carrying firearms. They aren't protecting cash/currency/valuables (like Brinks) and they are not Peace Officers. They won't be exempt of requirements of an ATC under the Firearms Act nor would the CFO issue an ATC. I agree that by-law officers should NOT be ca...

Re: Crime Prevention Society

Translink already has Transit Security (not the Skytrain Attendants that stand inside the stations)in addition to Transit Police. The crime prevention volunteers looking nothing like police or security. I don't see an issue with an extra set of eyes. We can't be everywhere at once and the extra set ...
