Re: Store Security releasing offenders
Good reply. Just look out for yourself and your family first. If someone decided to take legal action against you for "stopping and engaging in dialogue" do you think your company would defend you in court - with all the costs that entails? If the answer is no.....then my advice is don't do it. That...

Re: Police services and ATS
I'm happy to see ATS is no longer in the picture, but the financial barrier to applying hasn't gone away. $250 to start your OACP process (valid for 1 year) and additional fees for your vision and hearing exam at separate clinics (~$200). Definitely still going to be spending a lot of money conside...

Re: Store Security releasing offenders
If the person says "no thanks, I have not stolen anything, have a nice day" and walks away, are they free to go? Yep, sure are - unless the security guard has decided otherwise - and then it is more likely to have become an arrest or detention. Simply identifying themselves as a security guard does...

Re: Police services and ATS
Wow. Making it mandatory to have Post Secondary is going to exclude a lot of great mature applicants with decades of life experience.
That is really sad.
My class had a lot of very good people that only had highschool with a lot of life and work experienced gained from decades in the workforce.

Re: Store Security releasing offenders
I'd be inclined to agree with IC on this one Punisher. I've seen some pretty ridiculous psychological detention decisions in my jurisdiction and I think even they would not be willing to rule that identifying as Store Security and requesting merchandise be returned constitutes detention/arrest If t...

Re: Store Security releasing offenders
If I've just told them to give the stuff back and they do it and I haven't gone hands on or anything like that, that's all well and good as far as I can see it because I haven't made an arrest at that point. What you are describing is not legal FYI, and you have in fact legally violated someone's r...

Also I am more interested in the opinions of those of us in this career. Maybe private side would be better.

Re: A renewed call for a firearms registry
So with the new minority Liberal government propped up by the socialist/communist NDP how long before mass confiscations of legally owned firearms begin?
How do we think the confiscation and the enforcement of such confiscations would work?

Re: Adding ventilation to drum brakes?
The only thing drilling holes will do is allow mud water and other contaminants in and not only negatively impact your braking power but also prematurely rust and wear the components. I am an avid 4 wheeler and built my own 1-ton jeep fyi

Re: The subject of arming western Community Peace Officers
Zero2, As impressive as your resume is, I have to disagree with your stance. I am a strong advocate for clear distinction between police and other law enforcement agencies. I absolutely recognize why Alberta sees the need for sheriffs doing traffic stops or peace officers being out and about in pub...

Re: The subject of arming western Community Peace Officers
I have no doubt Police appreciate the extra manpower but really other than the lower salary these CPO's are doing a Police job without all the tools that Police have to protect themselves. Why take that risk and why would the municipality accept that responsibility? If they are doing arrests and war...

Re: The subject of arming western Community Peace Officers
Well the CPO's in Alberta to my knowledge do smaller towns and M.D.'s so it gives a town or M.D. control over how it's being protected in some capacity at least, without having to create its own police force. Also it's probably cheaper salary wise to have CPO's. CPO's carry radios and likely dispat...

Re: The subject of arming western Community Peace Officers
Why not just hire Police Officers to do the job? What's the point of having unarmed response to Police calls?
Literally every duty you listed is done by full Police Officers in Ontario.

Re: [Ontario] Private property & Road Signs Enforceable?
I have a question in regards to private property having Stop Signs and such. As I understand, HTA does not apply to private properties in Ontario. Does that mean these signs are basically not enforceable? Under HTA that is correct. HTA applies to a "highway". Look at your long form HTA fo...
